GORING PAINTING

Sir Harry Goring Painting

I have a painting of Sir Harry Goring, 6th Bt. (1739-1824), who was from your village of Washington.  The portrait was painted in 1783.  I bought it about four years ago.

As I am very interested in the history of the portrait itself, I am curious as to if you can find someone who may have seen the portrait before and/or who can figure out where it came from.  I suspect that it no doubt graced the walls of Highden House (now the Windlesham School), the home of Sir Harry, at some point.I understand there is a Harry Goring that lives nearby who is definitely related to this Harry, and is likely a descendant?

I would very much like to get in touch with him.I  have unsuccessfully tried to get in touch with the current Goring baronet, Sir William Burton Nigel Goring.

Any assistance you might be able to provide will be most appreciated.  I would suspect you may have some villagers who may be interested in this.

Attached is a photo of the painting, as well as a photo of me in front of Harry's grave at the parish church in your village (near the pub) of Washington in December 2005.  I also met a nice girl named Allison there, from what I recall.

Thank you very much,

Tom Baine Erlanger,

I have come across an old medallion presented to my Grandfather on 14th October 1896 for past services. It has an inscription around the face as follows ' Washington-Discovery-Lodge.'

I have no idea what this relates to and was wondering if it had any connection whatsoever with the village of Washington. Would you have any information that might help, Any info would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Buchan

I am looking to find out whether any of my ancestors were resident in or around Washington in the late 19th century.  The family name was Burcham, I know of a Thomas Burcham  born 1879 who was a farm bailif somewhere around either Washington or Findon.  The family has all but died out now but census records show upwards of 20 of them in the Findon/Washington area around 1880-1910.  There is even a possibility that Tom was a church warden or similarly involved in church matters.

I cannot be sure that they were in Washington but my grandfather often used to drive miles just to go to the pub in Washington, so my surmise is that this was the link with his childhood.

Rowdell House

I don't know if you'd be able to help me at all, but I am interested in information regarding Rowdell House; I believe it was demolished in 1952, but I am looking to find out why it was demolished and what happened to the Wrixon-Becher family who were living there. I live in Warwickshire and have recently acquired 5 photograph albums of the family; they begin in 1935 and end in 1968; and make a fascinating archive, recording family summers, horses, dogs, hunt meets, etc and feature the house heavily.

Thanks in advance

Michael Tilley

I am looking for information on my gt gt gt grandfather Michael Tilley ( in some records as Michael Tulley).

He was born in Washington, Sussex around 1808. His father was another Michael Tilley who was born in West Chiltington about 1879 and I believe his mother was Abigail Short, although I need confirmation of that. Michael married Ann Nightingale in Charlwood, Surrey on 22/4/1837 and they had 7 children that I know of :
George 1838
Mary 1841
Ann 1842
Sarah 1844
James 1846
Caroline c1850 and
Albert 1853

If anyone has any information they can add to this I would be extremely grateful.

Many thanks,

Hi

I am trying to trace a John West who according to the 1861 census was born in Washington about 1803.In 1861 he is 57 and married to Mary and living in Finsbury, London. I would be grateful if anyone knows details of  any Wests circa 1800.

Hi, I found the village website and would like to add to it by having Holland and Richardson connections in the village. My 3 x great grandparents and my 2 x gt grandmother (Holland) lived and are buried there. Both families migrated to Brighton later.
Can supply more if needed.

Margaret Burton (nee Taylor)

While playing with "google" I came across the Washington website and an article by Mary Ambrose about having lived in the cottage by Goachers Nurseries.

The cottage pictured was very familiar to me as it was on the corner of the lane leading to Muttons Farm.

I was born at "Muttons" in February 1953 and lived there until my marriage in 1971.  My parents must have been on the farm while Mary was in the cottage, I am sure they knew the Bartletts.

I attended Washington Primary School at the time when it was being extended.  I believe the Headmaster at that time was Mr Birch followed by Miss Dance.

Your article on the Settatrees was also interesting as my elder sister, Barbara,  was friendly with Judy Settatree and I can remember spending days with the family and being taken into the sweet shop and being allowed to choose from the jars of sweets which seemed huge at the time.

I left Sussex in  1976 moving to Essex for my husbands work.  We have since travelled with his work to Sudan, China and Pakistan and have now made our home in Marlborough, Wiltshire.

I did not keep in touch with anyone from primary school, but then there were very few of us at the time.  I do remember Linda Barnett, Lynn Johnson and Faith and Rosemary Morgan all of whom I believe went to secondary school in Worthing while I went to Rydon.  It would be interesting to know if any of them are still in the village or indeed anyone else who was around at the time.

Regards Margaret Burton.

SETTATREE FAMILY

Canadian seeks information on his roots

I am writing in hopes that you can help locate relatives of the Settatree family there in Washington.  My dad was the only member of that family to emigrate to Canada. I believe that he was born either in Washington or Charing. The family was large, several brothers and sisters.

My dad came to canada in the early 1900s and  I can recall him talking about his brothers Arthur, Tom Jack  and Bill.  They all lived  long lives. My dad died in 1973 at age 82.

His brother Bill had a son Ron with whom we were in touch several years ago. I believe he lived in a cottage on School Lane. He and his wife were written up in one of your local papers and we did have a photo copy of the article. Their daughter also lives in that community and we have misplaced their address and email number.

I am keenly interested in exploring my family roots  and  would like to get back in touch. There is a chance that my brother and I may make a trip to the U.K. soon to learn more about the Settatree family.

If anyone can help track down our relatives I would certainly appreciate hearing from them.

Subject: Buncton Churchyard

As you can see I live in Portugal and having retired early in life I now have the time to research all sides of my family tree.

I now have 857 names on my "All in One Family Tree" and have traced on one side of my Wife’s family (Female) back to a wedding on the 17th January 1577 of John Westborne to Joane Frenche at St Olave Hart Street London.

However last month both myself and my wife (Maiden name CLEAR) visited Buncton Churchyard to continue our research into her family. Imagine our surprise and disgust to see the vast majority of gravestones had been removed and therefore because of this could not find one ancestor of my wife’s family.

I am writing to you in the hope that you can inform us where the gravestones are and/or answer the following queries about my wife’s family by filling in the gaps.

We both want have confirmation of the birth dates and also when the following people died.

Henry CLEAR (Also known as Harry) was born 23 December 1775.

Ann Whelan was born 17 May and married Henry CLEAR.

Their 7 children were :-

William CLEAR was born 21 March 1812.

Sarah CLEAR was born 8 April 1813.

Christina CLEAR was born 18 November 1819.

William JUDEN married Christina CLEAR on the 29 September 1838.

Jasper CLEAR was born 23 September 1822.

Michael CLEAR was born 24 September 1826.

Emily WEST married Michael CLEAR on the 25 December 1852, she was born 30th November 1826 in Findon and died 8 July 1901 in Buncton.

Ellen CLEAR was born 27 June 1828.

John Boreham BURT married Ellen CLEAR on the 22 December 1849.

Jane CLEAR was born 16 December 1834.

Michael Clear & Emily West had 8 children as follows:-

David CLEAR.

William CLEAR was born 22 November 1853 and died 25 December 1918.

Eleanor STAFFORD married William CLEAR on the 17 November 1872.

Emily CLEAR was born 5 October 1855 and died 3 December 1855.

Harry CLEAR.

Walter CLEAR was born 20 August 1858 and died 31 May 1940.

George CLEAR was born 21 January 1860 and died 8 March 1931.

Ellen CLEAR was born 2 July 1862 and died 23 July 1928.

Hannah CLEAR was born 1 March 1864.

As far as we know all the above were born and died either in Buncton or Wiston. Incidentally we could not find a Wiston church.

I do hope sincerely that you can help me as it will be a year or two before we can come over to England again and as you probably know it is very expensive ( About £18.00 to £20.00 per hour.) to hire a Researcher at West Sussex Record Office at Chichester to search Parish Registers.

Best regards,

Subject: Washington Village Web Site

Your new site of "Family Search" could be of use to myself and possibly many more genealogists who may have connections around Washington and area. Living here in Portugal makes my research into my family tree (All to date lived in England) very difficult and the main source of my 19th and 20th century information is by correspondence to people whose names I have obtained from the Electoral Roll and therefore I would be pleased if you could kindly include all or some of the following enquiries.

Is there anyone who knows of any of the descendants of a John CARTER who married a Elizabeth CLEAR on the 2nd January 1719 at Wiston ?

Is there anyone who knows of any of the descendants of a Company Sergeant Major William FARRELL MSM of "C" Coy. 2nd Bn., Royal Sussex Regiment who died aged 29 on Monday the 30th September 1918 ? He was the son of W. Farrell of Ashington and the husband of Alice Lilian of 196, Ferguson Street, Palmerston North, New Zealand.

Is there anyone who knows of any of the descendants of a certain John LELLIOTT of Washington who was killed in the first World War (11th November 1914) ?  His name is on the war memorial in Washington Church graveyard. He served in the Scots Guards and his parents were George and Sarah Lelliott of Washington.

Is there anyone who knows of any of the descendants of a certain William PRINCE who was married four times ? - Harry or Frank were the children of the first marriage. - Alfred was a child of the second marriage and he was the father of Mrs H J T BRACKLEY, a former Mayoress of Worthing.  He started work as a ploughboy, earning sixpence a day. It was a notable event in his career that he was the first lad to use "THE IRON PLOUGH" when it superseded the old wooden implement. In 1887 he established himself in Chapel road, Worthing as a corn and seed merchant; and the business was transferred to the High Street and was subsequently on his death the business was passed to two of his sons, Messrs Edwin and Harry Prince.

Finally do you know who currently lives in Tilleys Farm, Washington as I wish to write to them ? My interest is the CLEAR family who used to live there in the late 18th century as we have in our possession a framed architect drawing of the farm house.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

Brian L Farrell.

Wood(s) Family

Would you please post this in your family history section with the e mail address below? Thank you!

I am searching for information about Harriet Wood(s) and her birth family. Harriet was born in Washington  1813 (according to 1851 census)

She married Levy Elphick in St Nicholas church, Brighton, SSX in 1832, and the family was still in Brighton in 1851.

Their children were George, Thomas, Harriet, Henrietta Maria, William, Ellen and unknown son and daughter. I have further information about the three known sons and Ellen, but nothing further about the others.

Harriet the mother probably died between 1851-1859, and Levy and their children went to Canada. Levy was listed as a widower in 1861 Candian census, and other information indicates they most likely immigrated 1857. Levy remarried to Ann Harris in 1862, but was widowed again by 1871.

Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
