Although I cannot under any circumstances offer to carry out any research on behalf of people tracing their family trees, I will be pleased to place requests for information on this page for others to answer.
I have a painting of Sir Harry Goring, 6th Bt. (1739-1824), who was from your village of Washington. The portrait was painted in 1783. I bought it about four years ago.
As I am very interested in the history of the portrait itself, I am curious as to if you can find someone who may have seen the portrait before and/or who can figure out where it came from. I suspect that it no doubt graced the walls of Highden House (now the Windlesham School), the home of Sir Harry, at some point.I understand there is a Harry Goring that lives nearby who is definitely related to this Harry, and is likely a descendant?
I would very much like to get in touch with him.I have unsuccessfully tried to get in touch with the current Goring baronet, Sir William Burton Nigel Goring.
Any assistance you might be able to provide will be most appreciated. I would suspect you may have some villagers who may be interested in this.
Attached is a photo of the painting, as well as a photo of me in front of Harry's grave at the parish church in your village (near the pub) of Washington in December 2005. I also met a nice girl named Allison there, from what I recall.
Thank you very much,
Tom Baine Erlanger,

I have come across an old medallion presented to my Grandfather on 14th October 1896 for past services. It has an inscription around the face as follows ' Washington-Discovery-Lodge.'
I have no idea what this relates to and was wondering if it had any connection whatsoever with the village of Washington. Would you have any information that might help, Any info would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

I am looking to find out whether any of my ancestors were resident in or around Washington in the late 19th century. The family name was Burcham, I know of a Thomas Burcham born 1879 who was a farm bailif somewhere around either Washington or Findon. The family has all but died out now but census records show upwards of 20 of them in the Findon/Washington area around 1880-1910. There is even a possibility that Tom was a church warden or similarly involved in church matters.
I cannot be sure that they were in Washington but my grandfather often used to drive miles just to go to the pub in Washington, so my surmise is that this was the link with his childhood.

| Rowdell House I don't know if you'd be able to help me at all, but I am interested in information regarding Rowdell House; I believe it was demolished in 1952, but I am looking to find out why it was demolished and what happened to the Wrixon-Becher family who were living there. I live in Warwickshire and have recently acquired 5 photograph albums of the family; they begin in 1935 and end in 1968; and make a fascinating archive, recording family summers, horses, dogs, hunt meets, etc and feature the house heavily. Thanks in advance Regards Judith Bettison |

| Margaret Burton (nee
Taylor) While playing with "google" I came across the Washington website and an article by Mary Ambrose about having lived in the cottage by Goachers Nurseries. The cottage pictured was very familiar to me as it was on the corner of the lane leading to Muttons Farm. I was born at "Muttons" in February 1953 and lived there until my marriage in 1971. My parents must have been on the farm while Mary was in the cottage, I am sure they knew the Bartletts. I attended Washington Primary School at the time when it was being extended. I believe the Headmaster at that time was Mr Birch followed by Miss Dance. Your article on the Settatrees was also interesting as my elder sister, Barbara, was friendly with Judy Settatree and I can remember spending days with the family and being taken into the sweet shop and being allowed to choose from the jars of sweets which seemed huge at the time. I left Sussex in 1976 moving to Essex for my husbands work. We have since travelled with his work to Sudan, China and Pakistan and have now made our home in Marlborough, Wiltshire. I did not keep in touch with anyone from primary school, but then there were very few of us at the time. I do remember Linda Barnett, Lynn Johnson and Faith and Rosemary Morgan all of whom I believe went to secondary school in Worthing while I went to Rydon. It would be interesting to know if any of them are still in the village or indeed anyone else who was around at the time. Regards Margaret Burton. |
